At the time of his passing, Senior Professor Benn Cohen held a 7th degree Black Belt in American Kenpo with nearly 40 years’ experience in the Kenpo system alongside various other Martial Arts including Judo, Aikido, and Kick Boxing.
He was a beloved teacher, mentor, and friend to many and is dearly missed. His students continue to teach his style and philosophies today at RONIN Martial Arts in Boca Raton, FL and Legacy Karate in Braselton, GA. Mr. Cohen's senior-most Kenpo student, Professor Dusty Chovanic, owns and operates a number of Legacy MMA Clubs and Legacy Sports Complex in the Atlanta area.
Mr. Cohen studied under Senior Grand Master (SGM) Ed Parker, the founder of American Kenpo, and his Vice President, Senior Master Joe Palanzo in Baltimore, MD. He later managed the Baltimore dojo for Mr. Palanzo where he received special tutelage and personal instruction. Later in life, he had the privilege of studying under GM Mike Pick as part of the Universal Kenpo Federation (UKF).
Mr. Cohen opened BCAK of Boca Raton in July of 2017 and was a positive influence in the lives of his many students and the local community.
He was a former SAG actor who appeared in four Martial Arts movies including: Mortal Kombat and three Don "The Dragon" Wilson movies.
Between 1988 and 2001 Mr. Cohen owned 3 Kenpo schools and a gym in the Orlando, FL area having more than 450 active members for many years. During that time he produced more than 100 State Champions. Mr. Cohen was a two-time Florida State Champion in fighting and was ranked in the top 5 in the country by NASKA in 1993 and 1994. He also won several national tournaments including the Bluegrass National Karate Championships. He was the starting middleweight fighter for the United Professionals National Karate Team having defeated over 100 nationally ranked fighters.
Sensei Cohen remains a widely respected and fondly remembered figure in the Kenpo community.
